Throwing down with Jay from SciTrek, Presidential Debate-style about the new SAG-AFTRA Agreement

So yesterday, I got to have a lot of fun with the team from the M3 (M Cubed) Podcast and engage in a mock debate about the new SAG-AFTRA Agreement with Jay from SciTrek.

I had the opportunity to discuss and defend my “no” vote on the agreement (yeah, I’m one of the 21.67% of members who voted “no” – a decision I did not make lightly). And while this debate was just for good fun, I sincerely enjoyed the opportunity to discuss this topic in depth and share my thoughts and reasoning behind my decision with interested parties.

And while I have my problems with this contract, I have to be honest – I’m not entirely broken up that it passed. This strike was brutal for labor and severely impacted a lot of families and local businesses. I’m glad we’re getting back to work, and I honestly hope my worst fears here prove to be incorrect.

However, I did vote no for two very specific reasons: AI and residuals.

I am very worried that the AI protections aren’t going to be enough, and I don’t agree with the notions that “we’ve got time before AI is good enough to replace living actors” (we don’t) or that “your biometric data and scans are safe and will be deleted.” Having worked in the tech industry, I don’t trust big companies to follow the data disposal protocols they profess to adhere to, and the SONY hacks are proof of what bad-faith actors can do when motivated.

I’m also very unhappy with the whole “bonus pool” concept replacing traditional residuals. I think we fumbled the bag on that one.

I go much further into depth on each of these topics and a bunch more in the debate video above.

Give it a watch, and let me know your thoughts in the comments! Do you agree or disagree? Am I spot on, or do I not know what I’m talking about?
