Designing Seussical the Musical at Burbank Center Stages with Conundrum Theatre Company!

by | Apr 7, 2023 | Designer | 0 comments

While working on Carrie: The Musical Horror last year at Boston Court Pasadena for Sequoyah School, I connected with the President of Conundrum Theatre Company, Lisa Sedares. Lisa and I hit it off pretty quickly, and before I knew it, she’d hired me to design her company’s upcoming production of Seussical the Musical.

This production turned out to be quite a challenge: the resident company at Burbank Center Stages wouldn’t allow me to do anything to the grid. I couldn’t add lights, remove lights, refocus lights, gel lights or… basically do much of anything. All I was allowed to do is program our show using their default rep plot. Very unusual.

But, it’s our job to do the best we can with what we’ve got.

And I have to say, the show turned out pretty good!

For a production that ran just under two hours using only a basic rep plot, I programmed over three hundred individual cues (over 400, when you break down multi-step cues). And the effort showed! StageSceneLA called the production “expertly lit.”

Sadly, the production ran only one weekend.

So, while this was a challenge, overall I have to say it was a great experience. I really like the whole team at Conundrum, and I hope to work with them again soon.

About Seussical the Musical

This fantastical family musical is based on the books of Dr. Seuss, including favorites like “Horton Hears a Who!”, “Horton Hatches the Egg,” and “Miss Gertrude McFuzz.”

Horton hears a noise coming from a speck of dust on a clover and commits himself to protecting it and the Whos who live on it; Jojo, a misfit Who who “doesn’t Think normal Thinks,” struggles to find his place in the tiny Who society; Gertrude McFuzz tries to catch the attention of her love – the kind and compassionate Horton. Through mishaps and adventures, these unique characters finally find what they seek – their places in their world.

Today, the #EmersonMafia took over the #WGAstrike picket line at @nbcuniversal, and it was an impressive turn out.

I had a blast meeting new fellow alumni, reconnecting with old friends (some I hadn't seen since graduation!), and catching up with faculty members that came out to support!

I wish I'd gotten more pictures, but I'm glad I grabbed this one! Always great to see @melindavalente and @ledaroca from @emerson_la. So grateful for your support!

Also, huge thanks to @thejudalina, @liz.alper, and @noellevinas for coordinating efforts both on the line and with the new school administration! Awesome job! I'm ready to march alongside y'all for another 500 miles, and maybe 500 more if that's what it takes. Let's go!
