While working on Carrie: The Musical Horror last year at Boston Court Pasadena for Sequoyah School, I connected with the President of Conundrum Theatre Company, Lisa Sedares. Lisa and I hit it off pretty quickly, and before I knew it, she’d hired me to design her company’s upcoming production of Seussical the Musical.
This production turned out to be quite a challenge: the resident company at Burbank Center Stages wouldn’t allow me to do anything to the grid. I couldn’t add lights, remove lights, refocus lights, gel lights or… basically do much of anything. All I was allowed to do is program our show using their default rep plot. Very unusual.
But, it’s our job to do the best we can with what we’ve got.
And I have to say, the show turned out pretty good!

For a production that ran just under two hours using only a basic rep plot, I programmed over three hundred individual cues (over 400, when you break down multi-step cues). And the effort showed! StageSceneLA called the production “expertly lit.”
Sadly, the production ran only one weekend.
So, while this was a challenge, overall I have to say it was a great experience. I really like the whole team at Conundrum, and I hope to work with them again soon.
About Seussical the Musical
This fantastical family musical is based on the books of Dr. Seuss, including favorites like “Horton Hears a Who!”, “Horton Hatches the Egg,” and “Miss Gertrude McFuzz.”
Horton hears a noise coming from a speck of dust on a clover and commits himself to protecting it and the Whos who live on it; Jojo, a misfit Who who “doesn’t Think normal Thinks,” struggles to find his place in the tiny Who society; Gertrude McFuzz tries to catch the attention of her love – the kind and compassionate Horton. Through mishaps and adventures, these unique characters finally find what they seek – their places in their world.
