My Lighting Portfolio: A Very DIE HARD Christmas at Theatre Unleashed

This year, I once again had the pleasure of directing and designing A Very DIE HARD Christmas at Theatre Unleashed. So, I suppose this isn’t just the latest entry in my lighting portfolio, but a Directing Portfolio and Producing Portfolio submission, as well. This musical parody of the iconic 80’s action movie not only lampoons Bruce Willis’ magnum opus but sends up every classic Christmas movie of the era, as well. It’s an action-packed, laugh-a-minute thrill ride you do not want to miss.

I love this show for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that we go buck wild with the special effects and do things like make the walls explode. Also, we put my secret family no-stain stage blood recipe to good use, by the gallon.

I’m not going to lie, I’ve used the same basic plot for three years running now, not only because it’s good, but because at 125 light cues, it would take me a long time to re-do it. I know I’ll have to rebuild it when we move Theatre Unleashed from LightFactory to ETC Nomad, but until then, why reinvent the wheel?

One of the things I do enjoy about working with LEDs, though, is that it’s very easy for me to change the look and feel of the set with a simple color shift. Even sub-standard DJ lights give me enough flexibility to change the scene from various rooms in Nakatomi Plaza to the roof, the front of the building, the airport, inside Argyle’s limo, and more.

That being said, if Santa’s in a giving mood this year, I sure wouldn’t say no to eight Stage Right Super-Bright, 12-watt x 7 LED PAR Stage Lights. At $129 a unit, I should know better than to get my hopes up, but hey, you never know. Maybe they’ll go on sale sometime in the next few weeks (sometimes they can be found for $97 a unit) and some generous donor will want to help Theatre Unleashed out.

Big thanks to my dear friend Theresa Stroll at SoCal Studios for the gorgeous photos! Please, hire her for all of your photography needs; she’s fantastic and knows how to make the pictures for my lighting portfolio look really polished and professional.

About A Very DIE HARD Christmas at Theatre Unleashed

High above the city of L.A., a team of terrorists has seized a building, taken hostages, and declared war. One man has managed to escape. An off-duty cop hiding somewhere inside. He’s alone, tired…and he doesn’t like Christmas. Come see a stage version of the holiday classic, complete with action, humor, Professor Snape taking people hostage, singing, dancing, the guy from ‘Family Matters,’ guns, puppets, explosions, the EPA guy from ‘Ghostbusters’ getting punched in the face, and Christmas miracles and familiar holiday friends galore. Maybe even an appearance by the legend himself, Santa Claus! Yippee Ki-Yay, Father Christmas!
